Criminals will use creative ways to get your personal and financial data. One technique they use is called “skimming.” Thieves use hidden electronics to steal the information stored on your card and record your PIN to access all that hard-earned cash in your account.
Some skimmers install a phony card reader or keypad. Others use hidden cameras to watch your hands on the keypad. You are your best defense when it comes to skimming. Keep these three things in mind every time every time you use an ATM.
- Always pay attention to objects mounted on the ATM or located nearby.
- Watch for cameras that may be hidden and positioned to capture your PIN. Cameras can be hidden on brochure racks and a pinhole. Look for pieces of plastic that don't match as they could give away the cameras hiding place.
- Cover your hand when entering your PIN at the ATM.
